Are you watching Only Murders In The Building? This third season is especially fun with big guest stars (Paul Rudd! Meryl Streep!), glimpses into New York theater culture, and plot twists that make it impossible to pinpoint the murderer. But my favorite part is the bold costume design, so here are seven looks I’d love to recreate…
Velvet dress with gold necklaces. Mabel (Selena Gomez) wore this body-hugging velvet dress with a floral print and plunging neckline to a suspect-stakeout-turned-first-date. I’m usually iffy about velvet (it can come off as ’90s and costume-y), but I audibly gasped when I saw this stunner. What completes this look are the layered necklaces, which add shimmer and feel current. To recreate, I’d pair the actual dress — or this navy one — with a necklace set.
Blue jumpsuit with hoops. This fall, I’ve been hunting for a workhorse uniform that feels effortless and cool for school drop-off, work meetings, and drinks with friends. Big thanks to costume designer Dana Covarrubias for reminding me of the power of a jumpsuit. Selena paired hers with a glam high ponytail and big hoops. Now I’m eyeing this jumpsuit, and I love these these chunky earrings.
Houndstooth on houndstooth. One of my favorite things about our girl is that she brings it with the prints! Seriously, from checkered cardigans to plaid blazers, she never backs down from a pattern. Here, the double-breasted coat would be enough of a statement, but she ups the ante with houndstooth oxfords and proves that you can never over-houndstooth. Since I’m more of a flats gal, I’d wear ballet flats with a knee-length coat.
Sweater vest with classic trench. At first, I was surprised to see Mabel/Selena sporting such a classic ensemble. But it only took me five seconds to remember that fashion greats know which timeless looks should be left untouched, and of course the khaki-trench-and-sweater combo is one of them (think: Ali MacGraw in Love Story). For a similar look, try an oversized trench, a knit vest, and chain-link earrings.
Shiny coat and mini skirt. For the entire season, I’d been waiting for an outfit to stake its place in Selena’s Only Murders costume hall of fame. Season one had the yellow coat, season two had the diamond sweater — and season three now has this blue-on-blue ensemble that masters the art of mixing textures. I want to recreate it with a navy coat over a corduroy skirt (and here’s the original skirt, if you’re curious).
Braided crown and button-up. Meryl Streep’s character brings big whimsical energy with her braided crowns and oversized button-ups. I’d wear a poplin number while trying out Reagan’s braided crown tutorial. But if you want to go full eccentric theater actress, top things off with a paisley shawl.
Silky statement pajamas. Finally, on blustery days when all you want to do is lounge at home and read, channel Martin Short and spend the whole day in pjs. Nothing says “I love life’s little luxuries and don’t care who knows it” like a silky set in an eye-catching print. This checkered set is now on my wishlist.
